Finally

At the beginning of the semester I did not really enjoy reading. I took this class to try and make reading a regular thing for me. So I guess you can say that I was a completely non-independent reader at the beginning. Now I am reading more than I have ever even thought of reading. I find myself reading about athletics and anything that has to do with sports. Another genre that I really enjoy now is the military novels. I really like hearing about other people’s experiences in war. The book that really got me to like the military type novels was called The Lone Survivor. This book can be seen in my first blog posts.

Practice Diction Analysis

Nicholson Baker's The Mezzanine is a pleasantly soothing depiction of where a man works. The playful description of him carrying his Penguin Paperback in a small CVS bag with the receipt on top is what opens up this colorful excerpt. The excerpt in its entirety is very descriptive. It is not only pleasing to read, but also the vivid visuals like "On sunny days like this one, a temporary, steeper escalator of daylight, formed by intersections of the lobby's towering volumes of marble glass.." create amazing mental pictures. Though there is a sense of frailness due to the marble and glass, this abruptly changes when Baker describes the "brushed-steel side panels" which creates an almost rugged appearance. Nicholson Baker's The Mezzanine is a grotesquely elegant excerpt with a little hint of ruggedness.

1) Level of formality
-At points formal
-Talking about elegance of marble, glass, etc.

2)Connotation
-Poetic
-you can tell by imagery words

3)Sound
-very smooth
-easy on the ears

Though I have not been up to date on my blogging I have been reading the most I think I have ever read before in my life. The books that I have read so far range in a variety of different topics. One of my favorite is called the Lone Survivor. This was the first book that I have read all the way through on my own time. I have been really impressed in the way that I try to take just at least half an hour before I go to bed to read. I really like reading before I go to bed because there is nothing really on my mind because all my other homework is finished and it is just my time to read in peace. One the weekends I usually read right when I get home from football practice which is around 10 30. I go outside if it is nice and just sit on the porch and read. Sometimes ill even put in some music. I think by next semester I am going to reread the hobbit, I really enjoy this book. All in all I have been keeping up with my reading pretty well, but the next step is blogging more than I am now.
Lil Waynes sense of style can be seen above through the way he is dressed. Also take note in the many tattoos he has.

Here are just a few more pictures of him.

Sentences of the month

"Fine I dont need anaesthetic. Set the leg without it. I can take the pain."
This is one of my favorite sentences. Marcus Luttrell, the main character in Lone Survivor, ends up getting shot in the shoulder. The hospital they are at ask if he needs anistetic and he replys that he does not have enough money or insurance for it so he says the quote above.

"Peace Corps or Marine Corps, just as long as it's hard core."
I liked this sentence because it really depicted how tough the main character in a fighters heart is. He was willing to do anything just to fight.

"Bullfight critics, ranked in rows,
crowd the enourmous plaza full.
But only one is there who knows,
And he's the man that fights the bull."
I really like this because having been a wrestler I understand that it is just you and the other person across from you, you have to ignore what is going on around you and focus on the objective.

So im still reading this book called the lone survivor. I still find it hard to believe that they all put themselves through that crazy stuff! Im finally getting to the part where they actually invade one of the bases on the hindu kush mountain range. The SEAL's approach in a blackhawk helicopter, which I do not know how they did that at all because it is so loud. Literally once all of the SEAL's exit the chopper there is an avalanche of gunfire. The main character, who is also the author of the book, Marcus takes command of the situation and tells them all to take cover. Though there is like no cover whatsoever they seem to find some in some tiny bushes. That is really where I stopped reading. This situation exhibits another amazing power of the human body, and this is called adrenaline. It is truly amazing what our bodies can do while put into a life or death situation. Many people also call this the fight or flight mode. I am really excited to keep reading this book, it never fails to keep me on the edge of my seat.

"Peace Corps or Marine Corps, just as long as it's hard core."

Patience is a virtue

Since I was a kid patience has been beaten into my head by both of my parents. Even today I still have a bit of patience…but I can get a little impatient at times..don't tell my parents that. What I am really trying to get at is the fact that anytime you are thinking about going into any of the armed forces you have to have patience. I think the SEAL’s have to be the most patient people out of anyone. In the book Lone Survivor SEAL team 10 is instructed to get on a C-130 which is a huge military plane. The SEAL’s end up sitting on the plane for countless hours. Each and every one of the SEAL’s has a way to keep their mind off of the long trip that they have. Once they arrive at their destination there is no time to waste. They end up going to a small stake out point and staying there for a long time. I do not think I would be able to sit and wait there for like 12 hours. Sometimes snipers have to spend up to two weeks just looking for enemies and collecting Intel on their targets. After sitting there for quite a while they then make their way up towards a small village where they steak out some more! I completely understand why they are waiting, but I still do not believe that I could do that. I don’t think I would have anything to do for that long . I know that I have repeated a lot of things but that’s really what I am reiterating. All in all the SEAL’s have amazing patience which the average person would most likely not have. CHILLIN

The amazing strength of the human body

Well this is my first post on blogger, so this should be interesting. I am reading this book called the Lone Survivor. It is a true story about a navy SEAL team who travels to Afghanistan to take out a few terrorist. That is just a very quick and brief explanation. The main point of the blog that I am writing is the training that is needed to be a navy SEAL. Not only do you have to be in the best physical shape of your life, but you have to have a strong mind. Not just anyone can go for a run on the beach with five people while holding a full size telephone pole...sounds crazy right? But to these guys its just business as usual. As I said earlier you have to have a strong mind in order to finish all the daunting tasks that all the instructors give to you. The training that the seals have to go through is called BUD/S training which stands for basic underwater demolition SEAL. BUD/S training is a 24 week long course. More than half of the people that enlist in the BUD/s training quit before the end. The entire course is compiled of many different physically and mentally challenging tasks. Physical conditioning, diving, and land warfare make up the biggest chunks of the course. These are some of the requirements.....minimum of 500 yd swim under 12:30, 42 push ups minimum in 2 minutes, at least 6 pull ups from a dead hang minimum, and a 1.5 mile run that has to be under 10:30 and ran in boots and trousers. Those are just the requirements. All of that is a cake walk compared to "Hell week". Hell week is five days and five nights with a solid four hours of sleep.I will hit on that a little bit later once i get farther in the book. It still seems to amaze me how amazing our body's are, and what they can endure.
